Nexsen Pruet Expands Intellectual Property Group in North Carolina

Team of New Hires Grow Firm's Capabilities

Nexsen Pruet continues to expand its presence in North Carolina with the addition of four intellectual property attorneys and a patent specialist. The group comes to Nexsen Pruet with more than five decades of combined legal experience, with an array of intellectual property knowledge and clients.

Nexsen Pruet welcomes attorneys Phil McCann, Clint Wimbish and Dr. John Zimmer as Members as well as Christopher Dodson as Special Counsel.  Dr. Janel Ezzell joins the firm as a patent specialist, focused on matters such as patent prosecution and technical advice.

Christopher Dodson practices in the area of patent law, with experience globally in patent preparation and prosecution, as well as licensing, patent infringement analysis and client counseling. In addition to working in a law firm setting, he has previously worked in-house with a global pharmaceutical company. He is also a registered patent attorney with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. 

Dr. Janel Ezzell is a patent specialist who supports the intellectual property team. She has her B.S. in Biochemistry and Cell Biology as well as her Ph.D. in Cancer Biology from Wake Forest University. She passed the Examination for Registration to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office in March 2018. Her application as a patent agent is pending final approval at this time.

Philip McCann prosecutes patent applications before the United States Patent and Trademark office and regularly advises clients on patent infringement and patent licensing issues as well as management of patent portfolios. He was previously Chief IP Counsel for both Great Lakes Chemical Corporation and Clariant Corporation and has been a 20 year member of the Association of Corporate Patent Counsel.

Clinton Wimbish concentrates his practice on patents in the chemical and biochemical fields – specifically focusing on advanced materials and nanomaterials. He counsels clients regarding commercialization of various technologies, freedom to operate and patent invalidity strategies as well as patent portfolios. Wimbish earned his B.S. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, his M.A. in Chemistry from Princeton University and his J.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Law.

Dr. John Zimmer focuses his practice on a range of intellectual property matters, including patent prosecution. He led his former firm’s intellectual property practice. Dr. Zimmer holds seven patents related to colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals and has authored or co-authored 13 papers appearing in peer reviewed scientific journals.  Dr. Zimmer earned his B.S. at Washington & Lee University, his J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law, and his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
